TED.com is an award-winning website featuring inspired talks from the world's leading thinkers and doers. Over the last four years, TEDTalks have been watched more than 300 million times worldwide, and TED has become known for best-of-breed video content, elegant interface design, and industry leadership on initiatives like the Open Translation Project. We're rapidly evolving our website -- which draws more than 8M monthly users -- and are looking for an experienced, versatile web engineer to join our small but mighty team.
Experience/QualificationsOur ideal candidate is an experienced, versatile engineer (a "utility infielder," as we like to say) with at least 5 years of work experience (and likely more) creating products and services that people love. You're curious, open-minded and a natural problem-solver. You're collaborative, not competitive. You'd welcome the chance to work on multiple projects over time, rather than specializing in a single area. You're willing to trade the comforts of a large company for the intimacy and impact of a small collaborative team, where your contributions have a huge impact on millions of users worldwide.
The ideal candidate has:
+ Experience building products and systems that people love across several of these areas: video delivery; conference registration systems; content management; community and social media platforms; localization or translation platforms; web services.+ Strong skills in Relational Data Modeling and Object Oriented Design+ Strong familiarity with the LAMP environment is essential; working knowledge of the Symfony framework and jQuery preferred. Experience with NoSQL and Ruby are big pluses.+ Experience with Flex/Flash/ActionScript 3, especially as it relates to developing video players. Integration with DoubleClick or other ad-serving platforms is a bonus.+ Experience with GIT for SCM+ Proven ability to architect robust, scalable, high-performance systems+ A passion for software craftsmanship; you're known for producing clean, elegant and maintainable code+ Experience with the challenges that arise from rapid growth: Scalability, security and speed are all frequent topics around here+ Ability to thrive in a collaborative -- not competitive -- work environment+ Ability to scope, phase and timeline a project, allowing for effective overall planning of resources+ Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues possessing a wide range of technical knowledge
You'll also need to be:
+ Comfortable in a start-up like environment, where everyone wears multiple hats+ Excited by the prospect of building new systems+ Willing to occasionally work long hours. You will be in good company!+ Diligent, thorough and capable of managing your own time. Our team's small size means everyone needs strong organizational skills and great follow-through
A passion for TED and a broad interest in the world -- including science/technology, design/architecture, global development, entertainment/arts -- are big pluses. Also: We only hire extremely nice people.
This is a full-time role. It could be based in TED's downtown New York office, but we're open to candidates who work remotely. Strong preference for those in the Americas, for time-zone purposes. TED is a nonprofit, but we offer a competitive package, including full benefits. This role reports into the Director of Engineering. We'd like you to start yesterday.
This is a fulltime position.
