Humanitarian Outcomes: Web developer – PHP/MySQL with design skills

(Anywhere)
Humanitarian Outcomes, an international research partnership based in New York and London, is seeking a web developer/programmer to help re-design/re-build its interactive database website, www.aidworkersecurity.org.
The candidate will work with the team to:
1. Configure the database into a reliable MySQL/PHP format. The current Microsoft Excel version consists of one spreadsheet of around 1000 rows and 30 columns and another of 500 rows and 25 columns. The online database should become the authoritative data source, and the database and subsets of it should be downloadable into a convenient and readable format of Microsoft Excel.
2. Set up an interface on the web for editing the database and displaying information (both internal and external) in tables, charts, and simple geographic maps. There will be around two dozen geographic maps at the global level, i.e. a country heat map; around two dozen custom reports; and around two dozen graphs summarizing the data in interesting ways.
3. Establish a simple ‘sign up’ for different levels of users (i.e. with different privileges) to input their own data, and to edit the dataset.
4. Update the design of the broader website, based on existing design elements of the site.
Required
Experience building dynamic, data-driven websites that are highly functional and user-friendly
Expert, hands-on knowledge of MySQL databases, PHP and html
Ability to take a project from brief to completion
Excellent communication skills and ability to discuss and respond to client needs
Desirable
Interest in international issues and humanitarian assistance, and ability to think creatively about the needs of the database users
Candidate should ideally be based in New York, NY to allow for some onsite work in Brooklyn, NY.
