* Ability to hold and maintain a US Security Clearance
* B.S degree in Engineering, Computer Science or related technical discipline
* High degree of programming proficiency in at least 2 of the following languages and software: Java (and Servlets) C, C++, Perl, XML, MySQL, Apache HTTP and Tomcat
* Experience in Java-based software packages for supporting Web applications
* Thorough demonstrated knowledge of Linux/Solaris server administration capabilities
* Experience and knowledge of hardware and software in an R&D environment
* Experience in creating, tuning, maintaining virtual machines (e.g.,VMware)
* Experience in administering systems in a networked environment
* Excellent oral and written communication skills - ability to document projects and provide status reports
* Excellent organization and time management skills - flexibility to handle a variety of tasks and shift priorities as needed

Additional Desirable Skills and Experience

* Research experience or working level knowledge of any of the following: Natural Language Processing (NLP), image processing, machine learning techniques
* Experience in distributed computing
* Experience with research-oriented application prototyping
* Windows and RedHat Linux operating systems
* Web site development and management
* Windows system security
* Windows shell scripts, Perl/php
* SAN, NAS storage solutions (e.g., NetApp)
* Configuring, installing, troubleshooting, and maintaining any of the following Wireless technologies (e.g., 3G, Bluetooth, CDMA, GSM, Wi-Fi, GPS, IrDA, GPRS, BREW, RFID, WAP, Amateur radio)
* Network switches
* Videoconferencing equipment in industry standard offerings (e.g., Polycom)
* Experience with tools created by the National Library of Medicine (e.g., UMLS resources, Entrez E-utilities)
