The Senior Interactive Designer is responsible for a range of design projects for NPR Digital Media products and services. Such projects may include both general visual and interaction design for NPR.org platforms including mobile, style guides, templates, and other design deliverables. Responsibilities include preserving the integrity of the established design standards of NPR.org. Projects may also include the design and production of news and other editorial graphics and interactive storytelling applications, including information graphics, charts, illustrations and maps.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Performs art direction and design tasks for a wide range of projects based on goals and needs identified by multiple stakeholders
2. Sets, maintains and advocates strict adherence to visual design standards and guidelines
3. Develops specific design concepts, systems, page templates, layouts of special packages and interactive modules, promotional graphics/banners, and other design elements for NPR Digital Media properties including mobile platforms
4. Ensures and advocates for overall site usability; consults with other team members on usability issues and participates in user testing.
5. Works closely with individual story producers and editors, photo/video editors, and other team members to identify opportunities for visual storytelling and information visualization on NPR.org including information graphics, maps, illustrations, and interactive modules.
6. Creates design concepts and assets for internal applications
7. Works closely with Design Director and other members of the User Experience team to enhance the user’s understanding of site content and overall experience
8. Works closely with NPR Digital Media technical team members to evaluate feasibility and maintainability of designs
9. Employs industry-standard technologies to produce work; is responsible for maintaining professional skill level, including knowledge of industry trends
10. Potentially supervises junior designers, interns or outside vendors
11. Performs other duties or special projects as assigned including, but not limited to, participating in concept development, prototyping, design, or graphic production for other NPR Digital Media projects
Required Skills
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Required:
1. B.A. in Design or Art from an accredited four-year college or university or equivalent.
2. At least 5-7 years professional experience as a graphic artist or designer, preferably in a large content environment
3. At least 3 years professional experience in Web design and/or graphics
4. Expert-level knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator
5. Demonstrated excellence in typography and color theory
6. Command of industry best practices in Web design, information design/architecture, usability and accessibility
7. Strong organizational skills and ability to work under tight deadlines; ability to multitask and self-manage the deadlines of competing projects
8. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to present ideas and designs to a group.
9. Understanding of the creative process in a collaborative environment; ability to incorporate both stakeholder/user feedback and design critiques.
10. Demonstrated ability to work well independently or on a team, always showing respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.
Desirable:
1. Experience developing visualizations of geographic and/or quantitative information
2. Experience with news publication design or Web design within a media or publication environment.
3. Experience with agile methodology
4. Experience with digital animation and/or 3D graphics
5. Experience in news-based photo or video editing and/or expertise in photography or videography
6. Familiarity with both Mac and Windows platforms
7. Strong familiarity with Adobe Flash, especially to create interactive information applications and graphics
8. Strong writing and proofreading skills
9. Familiarity with HTML, JavaScript, and table-less CSS layout
10. Familiarity with Microsoft Visio
