Preceptor and Senior Preceptor in Design-based Instruction / Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences / Cambridge, MA

Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences/Cambridge, MAThe Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) seeks applications for the positions of preceptor and senior preceptor in design-based instruction in mechanical and electrical engineering for the 2011-12 academic year. The preceptor position has an initial appointment of three years, and is then renewable annually for up to five additional years. The senior preceptor position is for a five-year renewable term.

The responsibilities of the preceptor position include: Teach or co-teach at least one course per semester; develop the design engineering aspect of the curriculum in conjunction with faculty and staff; coordinate course administration, including TA/TF recruitment and supervision, course website maintenance, scheduling, facilities readiness, software availability, etc.; advise and work closely with students on design projects within the curriculum, including senior capstone projects; and advise students on extra-curricular activities and design projects.

Candidates should have proven design experience in mechanical and/or electrical engineering fields, such as industrial design, robotics, electronics for instrumentation, embedded systems, etc., and able to demonstrate practical, hands-on experience building prototypes for real-world/industry applications. These positions require a strong passion for and commitment to working closely with students. Candidates must possess the ability to advise students through the complexities of multidimensional design tradeoffs, be willing to work with students in one-on-one settings and some nights and weekends, and demonstrate the ability to motivate and to convey excitement in the art of design.

An advanced degree in a relevant engineering field is preferred but not required, depending on an individual's background and experience. Possession of, or willingness to obtain, a state professional engineers license is desirable.

The responsibilities of the senior preceptor include all of the responsibilities listed above for preceptor plus: Serve as the principal instructor of at least one of the two courses taught within an academic year; supervise other teaching staff, including preceptors; develop and manage related budgets and administrative planning; assist faculty and senior administrators with strategic planning for program development; develop relationships with external partners to attract real-world design projects that translates to design-engineering opportunities for SEAS students; and help to link individual students to design-related projects in faculty laboratories.

Letters of application (accompanied by a CV, at least three letters of reference, and a teaching and/or design portfolio) should be sent to DesignPreceptor@seas.harvard.edu for the preceptor position, and to SrPreceptor@seas.harvard.edu for the senior preceptor position. Priority will be given to applications submitted by March 31, but will continue to be accepted until the positions are filled.
