Division: Server & Tools Business (STB), Developer's Division

Microsoft recently announced the Technical Computing initiative to the world.

We are committed to providing millions of scientists, engineers, and analysts with the computing power and tools they need to speed discovery and spend more time on their work instead of grappling with complicated technology.

The Workbench Compute Services Cloud team is bringing “Technical computing to the cloud: Microsoft will help lead the way in giving scientists, engineers and analysts the computing power of the cloud. We're also working to give existing high-performance computing users the ability to augment their on-premises systems with cloud resources that enable ‘just-in-time' processing. This platform will help ensure processing resources are available whenever they are needed-reliably, consistently and quickly.â€

We are looking for a talented, highly motivated software development engineer to help drive groundbreaking technology in parallel computing in the cloud. You will own aspects of the design & execution in a v1 product. And you will work alongside peers of the highest technical caliber to incorporate the best thinking into a platform that alters the way domain specialists manipulate extremely large quantities of data and perform computation and visualization on them.

In addition to rock-solid development skills, you need the drive and judgment to work in a short-cycle internet development environment. You need to thrive on complex and ambiguous problems, and demonstrate your ability to make solid progress when a priori solutions are non-existent or poorly defined.

What can you bring? We are building our core engineering team and are recruiting for some diversity in skillsets. We're looking for people with a healthy combination of these skills:

• Solid grounding in data structures & algorithms - particularly those applicable in HPC/parallel contexts

• Rock-solid design, coding and debugging skills, preferably at multiple levels in the stack : C#/C++, .NET framework (including GC internals and optimization), Win32 (including kernel objects for parallelism), umode & forensic debugging, Perl, AJAX, ASPX, LINQ, XML/XSL

• Proven track record shipping internet services/applications demonstrable experience with internet design fundamentals (OSI protocol stack, distributed and async design patterns & architectures, datacenter topologies, etc.) on time with high quality

• Grounding in the fundamentals of parallelism, concurrency, workload scheduling, and language constructs

• Understanding of the operational aspects of service design, development and testing ability to design low-cost, maintainable, highly available solutions that can handle tens of thousands of requests/updates per second, 24/7.

• Database systems expertise: deep understanding of SQL, SSIS, high-scale file-system storage, Azure storage paradigms, logical/physical design & implementation, low-touch data ingestion & cleansing pipeline design, and SSAS/mining.

• Familiarity with foundational online services: identity system integration & deployment, Live Storage, data center standards & practices, Azure storage and services paradigms, etc.

• Experience (good and bad) with the fundamentals of trustworthy high-scale service engineering: auth & access control, cryptographic key management, end-to-end threat modeling, defensive design for internet-facing services, SLA, policy compliance.

• The startup mindset: a makes-others-great approach, a willingness to fill gaps, and balanced ownership for the cool & uncool-but-essential tasks.

If you can connect your strengths & interests with the above, come talk with us. This position requires a BS degree or higher in Computer Science or a related field, plus 3+ years of industry experience.

Microsoft is an equal opportunity employer and supports workforce diversity.
