Software Development Engineer (SDE) II / Microsoft / Redmond, WA
Microsoft/Redmond, WALocation: Redmond, WA, US
Job ID: 749348-37080
Division: Server & Tools Business
This is a unique opportunity to join a V1 effort that's poised to change how information workers (IWs) deal with modern data.
In today's world, there are significant amounts of “ambient†data at hand just waiting to be transformed into valuable information. This data comes from a variety of sources and takes a variety of forms, running the gamut from Web data (e.g., HTML, OData, RSS, Web Services) to local data (e.g., text files, Excel workbooks, Access databases) to managed enterprise data (e.g., RDBMS, SharePoint, OLAP solutions). There is tremendous opportunity for our customers to realize value from this vast sea of available data. As such, Microsoft has a tremendous opportunity to enable customers in doing so. Our team's mission is to wring the friction out of data acquisition, thereby reducing “time to information†and, by extension, reducing “time to insightâ€.
Our project is part of the Data & Modeling Group (DMG) within the Business Platform Division (BPD). Fresh off of a successful executive review, we are currently transitioning from incubation to productization. Our approach is to build an end-to-end experience for IWs to create rough-cut queries that acquire, cleanse, transform, and combine data from multiple sources. These rough-cut queries are persisted in a form that can be reused either directly, by filling a persistent store with results, or by publishing results as a live data feed. This experience will integrate with and be complementary to existing tools of choice for the IW: PowerPivot, Excel, Access, & SharePoint.
To realize this experience, we're building out a number of different pieces of technology, including a dynamic language for expressing streaming data acquisition and transformation, a compiler and runtime for that language, a rich library of data sources & transformations, and an Excel-like UX for building up data acquisition & transformation “macros†that can be republished as new data feeds. In addition, we're building a new cloud service for hosting and managing these feeds.
We're seeking experienced developers who have a strong customer-oriented passion for technology and want to “wow†the IW audience with a new experience for turning data into information. We have opportunities in all areas of the product, from the runtime to the library to the UX.
Basic qualifications for the position include a college degree in computer science (or equivalent) and 4+ years of experience building & shipping production-quality software. Preferred qualifications include experience working with the .NET Framework, C#, or HTML/JavaScript.
