Job Description
As a web application developer, you will be building web-based software that helps AASHE's members, colleges, and universities to collaborate, share information and measure progress toward sustainability goals.
You should be able to design and implement new web-based applications, perform maintenance on existing software, set and meet deadlines and perform all duties without a great deal of supervision.
Skills and Requirements
- Strong software development skills and proficiency in one or more programming languages. Python or PHP is preferred.
- Solid understanding of modern web technologies, especially web frameworks (e.g. Django, Rails, Drupal).
- Familiarity with front-end/UI development (e.g. Javascript, jQuery).
- Ability to design web interfaces using HTML5 and CSS.
- Experience working with databases, especially MySQL, PostgreSQL or MongoDB.
- Ability to create project planning materials & design documents.
- Must be able to develop unit tests, use distributed version control (e.g. git or Mercurial) and write documentation for source code.
- Comfortable working from a home office with remote co-workers located throughout the United States.
Education and Professional Experience
Three years of combined relevant post-secondary education or work experience is required. A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Sciences or similar curriculum with software development emphasis is highly preferred. Code samples or project links should be provided at interview.
Background or interest in sustainability and/or higher education a plus.
Location
The web application developer can be located anywhere in the lower 48 United States. The candidate will be expected to have a home-office and be able to work from home. Preference will given to candidates located near other AASHE staff in the Pittsburgh, PA-Cleveland, OH corridor, Research Triangle region, or near our Denver, CO office. Must be able to meet for occasional working sessions with other IT staff in the region, if applicable.
Hours and Compensation
This is a full-time (40hrs/week), exempt position. Annual salary is $40,000-$45,000.

Travel Requirements
All AASHE staff are expected to travel to an annual staff retreat and the annual conference. Travel expenses are paid for or reimbursed by AASHE. The total travel is typically less than 10 days per year.
