Web Designer (Culver City, CA)

Position Summary

As a member of the Web Development team at an established college with both campus and online education, use graphic design skills to develop the layout, navigation and user experience for all company websites. Supported departments include Marketing, Online Education and many others. Provide expertise in web design and create consistency in branding, look and feel and UI for all web properties. Understand the student population and academic offerings, and translate into a web presence that contributes to both successful Marketing efforts and a high quality student experience.

Essential Functions

• Meet with various stakeholders to obtain a clear understanding of project goals and requirements.

• Using graphic design applications, translate these goals and requirements – as well as student needs, content and branding – into purpose-driven websites, banner advertisements and e-newsletter designs.

Upon approval, these designs will be passed on to web developers.

• Produce deliverables ranging from conceptual design compositions to storyboards to optimized graphical assets for production.

• Prepare designs, concepts, placeholders for video, and comprehensive layouts for stakeholder approval, making necessary changes based on feedback throughout the iterative design process.

• Create website design prototypes at different levels of fidelity (paper, wireframe, comprehensive mockup).

• Design individual website components (call-to-action buttons, forms, interfaces, sliders, banners, etc.), conceptualize artistic content that other graphic artists will create, and consolidate all elements into

sliceable layouts.

• Incorporate Web 2.0 style and ADA-compliance in design and guidance.

• Develop templates and style instructions that create visual web brand standards.

• Research existing web content and recommend design, navigational, and user experience best practices and cutting edge developments.

• Manage assignments so that all deadlines are met. If priorities are conflicting or deadlines are unrealistic, this should be analyzed and articulated before negatively impacting expectations.

• Provide consistent, high quality customer service and flexibility for all internal clients.

• Other functions may be assigned as necessary.

Technical Qualifications

• 3-4 years’ professional experience designing websites and web marketing materials in an educational or corporate environment. While graphic design is a major requirement for this position, it is critical that

candidates have experience in the particularities of designing for the web.

• High proficiency with Adobe Photoshop and Fireworks, both creatively and in preparing images for the web. Knowledge of Adobe Dreamweaver and/or Flash is a plus.

• A strong sense of composition, layout and color is required, along with the technical understanding of designing for the web.

• Knowledge of “grid theory” and other web-friendly layout design principles.

• Experience designing web layouts for different browsers and resolutions.

• Basic knowledge of HTML is required. Knowledge of CSS a plus.

• Ability to separate content from presentation and behavior (layout without using tables).

• Experience creating interactive Flash banners and animation is a plus.

• Ability to design for Section 508c compliance and usability.

• Strong knowledge of the latest trends in web-style (e.g. Web 2.0), layout, usability and UI.

• Strong knowledge of user interface and designing for interactivity (eg. up, down, and over states).

• Experience designing for mobile websites is a plus.

• Understanding of design considerations for successful Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a plus.

• Be prepared to show samples of your work!

Additional Qualifications

• This is an extremely fast-paced environment, so the ability to multitask and manage several different initiatives at once, while maintaining quality standards, is critical.

• Ability to analyze workload, accurately predict turnaround time, and keep management informed of status and changes. When there are conflicting priorities, know how to proactively seek guidance before a

crisis develops.

• Ability to think creatively and produce a number of ideas and solutions that can be expressed visually and explained articulately to project stakeholders.

• Ability to work independently with little direction, keeping management informed of status and changes.

• Extreme attention to detail, organization and creativity on a strict deadline.

• Must be a team player with drive, dedication and a positive attitude, someone with a “whatever it takes to get the job done” approach.

• Ability to define, champion and continually improve web design and development process.

• Experience in client interfacing within a professional environment. Necessitates strong customer service focus with efficiency and accuracy as a guideline.

• Ability to think strategically and work tactically.
