Web Developer (West Los Angeles - Brentwood)

Position: Web Developer:

Position Summary:

As a member of the Web Development team at an established college with both campus and online education, translate wire frames and layered images from Web Designer into functional, standards-compliant websites. Supported departments include Marketing, Online Education and many others. Provide expertise in front end web development. Use xHTML and CSS to create finalized websites that achieve the vision of the original design in aesthetics, functionality and overall user experience.

Essential Functions

• Meet with various stakeholders to obtain a clear understanding of project goals and requirements. Translate Web Designer’s blueprints, Copywriter’s text, and other submitted elements into purpose-driven websites and other web collateral that achieve these goals and requirements.

• Translate wireframes and layered comps into standards-based, ADA-compliant, cross-browser-compatible, clean xHTML and CSS.

• Slice and compress images for optimal web performance.

• Code dynamic web pages, such as forms, in server-side scripting language (PHP).

• Use jQuery or other javascript library to create interactive, AJAX-driven web pages.

• Build, test, debug and troubleshoot web applications and scripts.

• Maintain and implement changes into existing web properties.

• Maintain high level of organization for all front end code and files.

• Research existing web content and recommend design, navigational, and user experience best practices and cutting edge developments.

• Manage assignments so that all deadlines are met. If priorities are conflicting or deadlines are unrealistic, this should be analyzed and articulated before negatively impacting expectations.

• Provide consistent, high quality customer service and flexibility for all internal clients.

• Other functions may be assigned as necessary.

Technical Qualifications

• 4-5 years’ professional experience in front end web development, with comprehensive knowledge of the web development lifecycle.

• Mastery in hand-coding (without a GUI) W3C- and Section 508c-compliant xHTML and CSS is required.

• Mastery in slicing layered PSD and PNG mockups and compressing individual images for optimal web performance is required. This assumes proficiency in Adobe Photoshop and Fireworks.

• Ability to use PHP for basic form creation and includes.

• Ability to use jQuery or other javascript library for creating AJAX interactivity. Must have complete understanding of the DOM.

• Experience testing and troubleshooting web applications and scripts across multiple browsers (IE6, Safari, Chrome, etc.), operating systems and resolutions.

• Deep understanding of the particulars of separating code from content. Understanding of design considerations for successful Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a plus.

• Experience implementing video and Flash applications into web projects.

• Experience with content management systems (such as WordPress) and integrating markup into CMS.

• Ability to maintain a large website, utilizing current best practices, with a high level of code and content organization.

• Knowledge of functions and classes, as well as Web 2.0, is preferred.

• Knowledge of HTML5, Adobe Flash and coding for mobile websites is a plus.

• Experience with source control and collaboration tools (such as Subversion and Source Safe) is a plus.

• Basic knowledge of networks and how the internet works, is a plus.

• Code samples and a skills test may be required.

Additional Qualifications

• This is an extremely fast-paced environment, so the ability to multitask and manage several different initiatives at once, while maintaining quality standards, is critical.

• Ability to analyze workload, accurately predict turnaround time, and keep management informed of status and changes. When there are conflicting priorities, know how to proactively seek guidance before a crisis develops.

• Ability to work independently with little direction, keeping management informed of status and changes.

• Extreme attention to detail, organization, creativity and technical accuracy on a strict deadline.

• Must be a team player with drive, dedication and a positive attitude, someone with a “whatever it takes to get the job done” approach.

• Ability to define, champion and continually improve web design and development process.

• Experience in client interfacing within a professional environment. Necessitates strong customer service focus with efficiency and accuracy as a guideline.

• Ability to think strategically and work tactically.
